The place of a design agency in shaping global movements

The place of a design agency in shaping global movements

/ /

2024 is proving a prevalent year for political and social movements across the globe.

From a design agency perspective, Crush can’t help but notice the impact of politics on the creative industry, and, perhaps even moreso, the creative industry’s impact on driving political movements.

We’ve been supporting the world renowned sexual and reproductive health and rights movement SheDecides since their inception in 2017. As a female-driven agency ourselves, collaborating with such a genuine, global movement through brand and website development feels especially empowering.

SheDecides is a political movement created so that “women and girls everywhere can decide what to do with their body, life and future”. Our work for SheDecides focuses on giving the movement an online platform and unified voice in which to be heard by governments, thought leaders and changemakers across the world.

SheDecides, then and now

SheDecides was originally founded in response to the 2017 Trump reinstatement of the ‘Global Gag Rule’, which blocked US funding for non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in foreign countries giving abortion services, counseling, referrals or advocating to decriminalise abortion.

Since the 2021 Biden rescission of the Global Gag Rule, SheDecides have continued to focus on campaigning for changes in laws and policies, protecting and championing female rights across all countries.

As we approach the 2024 US Presidential Election, tensions around abortion are on the rise again. The Global Gag Rule could be reinstated and third world country movements towards bodily autonomy are under threat. This means that our role in supporting SheDecides’ continued representation for women and girls everywhere is more important than ever.

Digital’s influence on political movements

In 2024 so far, we have supported SheDecides in launching campaigns on Youth Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), Safe Abortion in West Africa, and the most recent ‘Together for Safe Abortion’ official statement. The latter focused solely on reaffirming the movement’s stance on safe abortion, amidst the ongoing political debates on abortion in America.

From dedicated website landing pages and microsites, complete with interactive e-book carousels and bilingual translation tools, to engaging email campaigns, our support as an agency focuses on elevating SheDecides’ website and online communications – impactfully and cohesively.

These new website designs and developments, supported by advanced digital marketing techniques and brand, have provided SheDecides with a unique, recognisable digital identity that adds powerful support to their work as a transformative political movement.

However, it’s not always just about the look. Our work with SheDecides also offers clear data from which they can continue driving change; tracking campaign ROIs, website traffic and engagement analytics.

“Running an organisation like SheDecides is very different to that of running a business. Having supported us since the very beginning, we’re very grateful that Crush has always understood that.

Their work has enabled us to spread our core message across the globe, transcending borders and languages, and uniting the world in a joint mission to ensure that she decides – always.”

– Angie Windle, Senior Communications Advisor at SheDecides

Whilst Crush as an agency is part of the small minority of creative agencies founded by women, together we make up a team of both men and women.

We don’t support movements like SheDecides just because of the statistical reality of our female founding. To us, it’s important to recognise that these movements and organisations, whilst female-empowered and driven, need the collaboration of everyone – of all genders – to create a world where she decides.

Be it through brand, design or website development, we want to be a part of purposeful creativity.
