We’ve gone Halloween crazy here at Team Crush, so to celebrate we thought we’d share some interesting Halloween facts for you to wow your colleagues, friends and family
• Halloween is a combination of several different celebrations from various cultures and religions, during different times in history. That said it is believed that Halloween originated in Ireland
• Halloween is celebrated on October 31st, which is the last day of the Celtic calendar and a pagan holiday honouring the dead. It is one of the oldest celebrations in the world, dating back over 2,000 years to the time of the Celts who celebrated Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season
• Trick or treating comes from the Middle-Age practice of the poor dressing up in costumes and going around door to door during Hallowmas begging for food or money in exchange for songs and prayers
• Jack-o-lanterns were originally carved into turnips but when the tradition was brought to America, pumpkins were more available, so today’s jack-o-lanterns were born
• During Samhain, cats were used as part of a priest’s ritual to predict the future
• Apple bobbing in America was a fortune-telling game. The first person to get the apple without using his or her hands would be the first to marry
• In America Halloween also is recognised as the 3rd biggest party day after New Year’s and Super Bowl Sunday, and the second highest grossing commercial holiday after Christmas
• Orange and black are Halloween colours because orange is associated with the Fall harvest and black is associated with darkness and death
• If a candle’s flame turns blue on Halloween night, legend has it a ghost is near
• New York City has the biggest Halloween parade, it sees more than 2 million people gather to witness the celebration
And one for next year
• Full moons very rarely fall on Halloween; however, Astronomers say it is possible that it may happen on October 31st 2020 – Spooky!
Happy Halloween!!
